Editorial Policy

How the educational content on this site, the personal finance glossary and our guides, is produced, verified, and corrected. The standard we hold it to is simple: accurate enough to act on, and plain enough to actually read.

How our content is produced

Our educational content is written with the assistance of artificial intelligence tools following a rigorous quality assurance process, and periodically reviewed by credentialed and experienced human financial advisors. Every glossary term and guide page names its reviewer and shows the date of the page's last material update, and the reviewer's name links to their profile so you can see their qualifications.

How facts are verified

Tax figures, contribution limits, benefit rules, and legal citations are checked against primary sources such as the IRS, the Social Security Administration, the SEC, the Code of Federal Regulations, the United States Code, and the Federal Register, not against other websites' summaries of them. Year-dependent numbers are maintained in a single reference file, each with the source it came from, and updated when the agencies publish new figures.

Before a page is published, a separate review pass attempts to refute each factual claim rather than confirm it. A claim that cannot be verified at its source does not ship. We do not publish a dollar amount, threshold, date, or citation we could not verify.

The references we use

References used in our content include government data, academic papers, interviews with industry experts, and reputable primary sources. Glossary term pages carry a Sources section citing the references behind the page; citations are being added across the published glossary and are included on new pages as they publish.

When credible sources genuinely conflict, we do not quietly pick a side: the page either states the disagreement or leaves the claim out until it can be resolved.

What the date on each page means

Content pages display one date: "Last reviewed by [name] on [date]." It marks the page's last material update, verified the same way the original content was.

Corrections

When we find an error on a published page, or a reader points one out, we correct the page and update its review date. To report an error, reach us through our contact page.

Independence

There are no ads, affiliate links, or sponsored placements in our educational content. AdviceOnly is paid through the membership fees paid by our advisors for the services we provide to them, never for how a financial product, company, or strategy is described.

Educational content, not personalized advice

Everything in the glossary and guides is educational information about how things work in general. It is not investment, tax, or legal advice for your situation, and reading it does not create an advisory relationship. For advice on your situation, talk to an advice-only advisor.
